Shaista case hearing on 27th
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court will hear a petition by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and the Aurat Foundation against a decision by the Almani tribe jirga declaring Shaista Almani, a girl of the tribe, kari.
Ms Almani, who married Balkh Sher of the Mehr tribe of her own free will, had been sent to Karachi for psychotherapy by a Sukkur bench of the Sindh High Court. She is now lodged in the women’s police station for her safety. After their marriage the couple were kept in illegal confinement by relations of Mr Sher. The Sindh High Court’s roster branch confirmed on Friday that it had received the case file from Sukkur and the matter had been set for hearing on January 27. —Staff Report
