8000 CNG buses in next 5 years

KARACHI: Some 8000 (Compressed Natural Gas) CNG buses will be brought on city roads during the next 5 years. Sindh transport minister, Adil Siddiqi on Monday said government has set up a committee of secretaries of finance and excise and taxation and environment departments, Mass Transit Cell and other concerned agencies, which will review the implementation of the plan.

He said steps are being taken for gradual phasing out of old buses, yellow and black taxis and 2-stroke rickshaws so that transporters may not have to face unemployment. He said federal government has already allocated Rs 500 million under 2005-06 PSDP under which, 8000 environment-friendly buses would be operated during the next five years.

In this regard the provincial government would to introduce a new, modern and safe transport culture under which priority would be given to CNG buses in future. app
