SHC suspends EC decision on Karachi by-polls

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday suspended the June 9 announcement by the Election Commission at the provincial government’s request to withhold by-elections scheduled by the EC for August 9.

Results for by-elections on two national and one provincial assembly seat from Karachi, were declared void by the EC, which ordered fresh by-polls for the three seats. Three candidates of the MQM petitioned the Sindh High Court challenging the EC notification. Later, the Sindh government asked the EC to postpone the by-polls until the SHC reached a decision. The EC turned down the Advocate General Sindh’s request and asked him to approach the SHC if necessary. The SHC has suspended the EC’s notification for fresh by-polls.
