Provincial and district govts must cooperate: Elahi
Staff Report
LAHORE: Close cooperation between the provincial and district governments will speed up the process of development and reduce poverty in the province, said Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Tuesday.
Addressing a meeting of the Punjab’s district nazims, Mr Elahi said that nine percent more funds had been allocated in the 2004-05 budget for southern Punjab, including Rs 8 billion for a new sewerage and sanitation system in 21 tehsils. He said that women members of district and tehsil councils would be given salaries to meet expenses including travelling costs.
The chief minister said that if district nazims and members of the Punjab Assembly worked together, it would be easier to draw up effective and transparent development plans. He said executive district officers for education and district governments were being provided new vehicles to replace a quarter of the old ones.
Mr Elahi said that the performance of basic health units (BHUs) was being reviewed to ensure the availability of sufficient medical facilities and workers. He said that the primary health care project in Rahim Yar Khan would also be implemented in other districts.
