Polls tough on parties that impeached Roh

SEOUL: The two opposition parties that voted to impeach President Roh Moo-hyun are suffering in the opinion polls ahead of next month’s parliamentary election, survey results showed on Monday.

Tumbling support ratings in polls since Roh’s impeachment on March 12 over an election law violation have even prompted junior members of the Grand National Party and Millennium Democratic Party to call on party bosses to withdraw the impeachment vote. The vote initially jolted financial markets but they have since rebounded, and the government says its five percent growth target is attainable if the political uncertainty ends soon.

A Dong-a Ilbo newspaper telephone survey of 2,108 voters showed support of 45.2 percent for the Uri Party, which backs Roh, against 14.6 percent for the main opposition Grand National Party and 3.9 percent for the Millennium Democrats. —Reuters
