Rizvi’s security bothers HRCP
LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Thursday expressed serious concern for the security of journalist Khawar Mehdi Rizvi, believed to have been detained for over a month, and urged his either his release or a trial by law.
The HRCP Secretary General Hina Jilani said in a statement that the authorities’ failure to produce the journalist before court would shock those who believed in the rule of law. Mr Rizvi was believed to have been taken into custody with two French journalists over a month ago. The initial reports about the incident, released to the media, mentioned his arrest and he was even shown on the television. The persistent refusal of the law enforcing agencies to own up to his arrest and detention raised apprehensions about the detainee’s life and health, Ms Jilani said. —Staff Report
