Dhaka court again postpones verdict over 1975 political killings

DHAKA: A Bangladeshi court on Tuesday delayed for a second time a verdict in the 1975 “jail killing” case in which four heroes of the country’s independence struggle were shot dead inside a Dhaka prison. The postponement was announced after a lawyer for one of the accused won an application to have the court hear evidence from the police officer who filed the original case. The officer’s testimony will be heard on September 29, Judge Matiur Rahman ruled. It was the second time in less than a month that the eagerly awaited verdict has been postponed. The politically sensitive case has riveted the nation for nearly three decades. The judge had been due to announce the verdict on September 7 but the hearing was cancelled after he said he was too sick to attend court. Twenty former politicians and army officers stand accused of the murder of the four national leaders who were shot at close range inside Dhaka Central jail before dawn on November 3, 1975. afp
