WAPDA to buy surplus power generated by sugar mills

LAHORE: Representatives from various sugar mills on Wednesday attended a meeting at the WAPDA House to discuss the feasibility to enhance their power generation capacity and to sell the surplus power to WAPDA.
WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (r) Zulfiqar Ali Khan assured the delegates that WAPDA would support generation of cheap power from indigenous sources such as biogas and the environment-friendly process of cogeneration.
He asked them to generate as much power as possible through cogeneration and assured them that WAPDA would buy all their surplus power. He also urged them to prepare a feasibility study in this regard.
WAPDA has issued Letters of Interest (LOIs) to nine Sugar Mills for carrying out feasibility studies on expansion and modification of their cogeneration capabilities.
According to an estimate there is a potential of tapping 500 to 1000 MW of cheap power generated from biogas particularly during the winter months.
Shaikh M Yahya from JDW Mills, MA. Khaliq for HWG Mills, Taj Muhammad Khan, Legal Advisor to Hamza Sugar Mills, Bashir Ahmad from Indus Sugar Mills Ltd. Ch. Zaka Akhtar from Ashraf Sugar Mills, Asad Rashid from Chishtian Sugar Mills Ltd. and Ahmad Jahangeer Khan from Tandlianwala Sugar Mills Ltd made up the delegation.
