MMA candidate says Landhi ‘a police state’

Aslam Mujhaid, the candidate of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal in NA-255, said on Wednesday the police has been creating an environment of harassment in the area to create room for rigging.

“Police is raiding the houses and arresting innocent people,” Mr Mujhaid said. He said armed men had established pickets in parts of the constituency, with police turning a blind eye to them.

He alleged that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s ministers are visiting the constituency and using state machinery to win the elections. He said four police officials and a town police official had been changed since the announcement of the elections. “Landhi has become a police state,” Mr Mujhaid said.

He alleged that police has been arresting youths and forcing them to write down an apology for not supporting the MQM in the past and an assurance that they would work for it in future.

“Those who are not writing these letters are being sent to jail,” he said.

He said he had written letters to the Election Commission informing it about the situation of the constituency. But there has been no reply from the commission so far, he said. —Staff Report
