UEFA confirm one-year ban for Titov
NYON (Switzerland): An appeal by Russian footballer Yegor Titov against a one-year ban for doping was denied by European football’s ruling body UEFA here Saturday. The 27-year-old Russian international, who plays for Spartak Moscow, was suspended after testing positive for the banned substance bromantan – which is often used as a masking agent – after the first leg of a Euro 2004 playoff against Wales (0-0) on November 15 in Moscow. Titov will now miss the 2004 European Championships and will be banned until January 21, 2005. UEFA also fined him 6400 euros (dollars) while his club have also been fined 12800 euros. Wales, who failed to qualify for the Euro 2004 after losing the second leg playoff, appealed to UEFA to disqualify Russia from this summer’s championships after Titov’s positive result become known. —AFP
