Turkey makes arrests over bombings

ISTANBUL: Turkey said on Friday it had made several arrests over the deadly bombings of British targets in Istanbul as Al Qaeda claimed it was behind the attacks and warned of more bloodshed.

Saudi newspaper Al-Majallah received a message on Friday saying: “Al Qaeda and its associates throughout the world are the ones that carried out the two swift attacks.” Osama Bin Laden’s network also threatened the United States and Japan “with new operations”, while Washington and London warned of fresh attacks and countries around the globe stepped up security around sensitive sites. Turkish FM Abdullah Gul confirmed arrests had been made but declined to go into details. “Some people have been arrested,” he told a press conference. —AFP
