13 women and 7 men fall victim to ‘honour’ in 5 months in Lahore

LAHORE: At least 13 women fell victim to honour killing while seven men also lost their lives to this ‘tradition’ in the city in the first five months of 2005, Daily Times learnt on Friday.

On January 14, a man strangled his wife to death for allegedly having an affair with a neighbour in the Sanda police precincts. Accused Ziaullah told the police that his wife Shahida was involved with Muhammad Arshad.

A man and a woman were killed and four others injured in the name of honour in Misri Shah police limits on January 23. Mehboob Khan was involved with Ayesha, the niece of Riaz. Riaz shot his niece dead and later attacked Mehboob and his family at their house. Five people of Mehboob’s family were injured. Later Yaqoob Khan, Mehboob’s father, died at Mayo Hospital.

A man gunned down his sister over a marriage dispute in Gulshan Ravi police limits on February 10. Rabia Muzaffar wanted to marry a man of her choice, which annoyed her brother Kashif, who later killed her with the help of his accomplices.

Shaukat Ali, a resident of Factory Area, was assassinated for allegedly having an affair with Shabnam on February 12. Nazir Hussain and Sabir Hussain, Shabnam’s brothers, and her father Allah Dita shot Shaukat dead at Gulistan Colony.

A mother of four was killed by her brother in the name of honour in Sanda police precincts on February 23. Shahnaz, 32, married Zafar Ali after getting a divorce from her first husband. Muhammad Azam, Shahnaz’s brother, shot her dead for he considered her to have ‘loose morals’.

A man shot his sister dead in the Factory Area on March 2. Munir shot Naseera, 28, a resident of Chungi Amar Sadhu, for having ‘loose morals’.

Three men shot a girl dead after she refused to marry one of them in Shahdara Town police limits on March 5. Shahbaz, Adnan and Mola shot dead Shumaila, a resident of Siraj Park, after she refused to marry Adnan.

A man was killed for allegedly having an affair with a woman in the Wahdat Colony police jurisdiction on March 7. Mushtaq, 21, was said to be involved with Parveen. As a result, Parveen’s brother Javed shot him dead.

A man shot his sister dead for allegedly having an affair with a man in the Manga Mandi police jurisdiction on March 8.

Haroon, a resident of Mustafabad, Shahdara Town, shot dead his 19-year-old daughter Sumaira on March 14 over the suspicions that she was involved with a man.

A man killed his sister in Garden Town police limits on March 9. Hina Basharat, 16, a resident of Islampura, worked at a beauty parlour.

A man shot dead his brother-in-law in the Gujjar Pura police jurisdiction on April 13. Tariq Mehmood married Misbah, a resident of Garden Town, about six months ago against the will of her parents. He had been receiving life threats from his in-laws. Shakeel, Shahid and Saghir shot Tariq dead at his house in Jani Pura.

A man shot dead a cousin of his wife after a domestic row in Sherakot on March 15. Yaqoob Masih had a dispute with his wife. Tariq tried to intervene at which Yaqoob shot him dead.

On the same day, a man killed his niece for eloping with a man in the Race Course police jurisdiction. Uzama Bashir, a resident of Khokhar Town, eloped with a man and returned home after two months. Her uncle Maqsood Masih strangled her to death at her house near Mayo Gardens Club.

A married woman and the man she was having an affair with were murdered in the Baghbanpura police jurisdiction on April 28. Sakina, mother of four, had an affair with Imran. She eloped with him on April 17. Her brother Riaz killed her and Imran after she returned home. A man killed his wife in the Burki police jurisdiction on April 30. Shaukat suspected that his wife Fehmida was having an affair with a neighbour.

Sher killed his wife Fauzia on the suspicion that she was having an affair with a neighbour in Civil Lines police limits on May 7. She had two children.

A newly wed couple was shot dead in the Shalimar Town police jurisdiction on May 18. Shahid Amin, 26, married Nagma, 22, against the will of their parents about 15 days ago. Shafiq shoot his sister Naghma and her husband at their house in Bogiwal. They died on their way to hospital.
