ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission (EC) postponed on Wednesday the by-election for the National Assembly’s constituency of 271-Kharan-cum-Panjgur because of security reasons.

The election scheduled to be held on May 7 would be held on May 28. The commission revealed that the Balochistan government had asked for postponement on the grounds that prevailing security conditions in the province, particularly in the constituency, was not satisfactory.

The government said that the situation was not conducive for the by-election because all law enforcing agencies had been deployed to provide security to key installations in the province, particularly in the bordering areas and Dera Bugti. The government had also increased the security for Chinese experts working in Gwadar. Moreover, the rains had also affected the most parts of the constituency and the Kharan district nazim also requested for the postponement of the election.
