LHCBA polls on February 26

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) will have its 113th elections on February 26. Justice (r) Fakharun Nisa Khokhar and Khawaja Saeeduz Zafar are the foremost candidates for the presidency of the LHCBA.

Moazam Iqbal Gill will be another candidate for the LHCBA’s top post but the contest is expected to be primarily between Khokhar and Zafar. The Professional group of lawyers is supporting Khokhar while the Ashraf Whala group and the government is supporting Zafar. The Pakistan People’s Party and Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy are evenly split in their support of the two candidates.

The candidates for various posts have geared up their canvassing and are holding luncheons, tea parties and dinners to garner support. Around 9,429 lawyers will cast their votes to elect the next LHCBA leaders.

Ahmed Awais, the bar president, will act as the returning officer for the elections. Polling will start at 9am and continue till 5pm. A thousand lawyers will not be able to cast their votes because they haven’t paid their dues.

Sarajul Islam, a candidate representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, and Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry will contest the seat of bar secretary. Fardoos Imtiaz, being the only candidate for the seat of the bar finance secretary, is expected to win unopposed.
