Afghan refugees to be registered from October 1

* Three-day drive to be launched at 1,000 places

By Ghafar Ali

PESHAWAR: The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) would start registration of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan from October 1, which would continue till October 3, an IOM source told Daily Times on Wednesday. He said the IOM would increase the period by a day or two if needed.

The registration will enable thousands of Afghan refugees living in camps to cast their vote in the first Afghan presidential elections, he said.

“The Afghans living as refugees in Pakistan will be educated about the method of casting votes,” he said. The IOM has recruited more than 400 workers for the registration campaign.

The source said around 800,000 Afghan voters would be registered for the presidential election in October and for the Olasee Jirga (National Assembly) elections in April. He said that every individual registered at a place would poll his or her vote at the same station. He said every voter would be given a registration slip bearing his or her name and a vote number.

He said that registration would be carried out at more than 1,000 places in refugee camps. He said there was no plan to computerise the registration record. He said that the IOM was working with the Joint Electoral Management Body (JEMB), an election commission of Afghanistan.
