Adventurer plans Atlantic bottle crossing
A Belgian adventurer is planning to cross the Atlantic in a bottle. Fons Oerlemans, 65, from Antwerp, is currently building the six tonne vessel out of steel and hopes to set out next year.
He told Het Laatste Nieuws: “The casing of the bottle is already finished, now I’ve got to install the motor, a kitchen, a bedroom, a navigation system and so on.”
It will be Mr Oerlemans’s seventh transatlantic voyage in an unconventional boat. In 1975, he crossed the ocean on a home-made raft.
He has also sailed to Barbados in a steam boiler and crossed the Atlantic on a truck attached to a raft.
He added: “On the ocean, we always see a lot of floating bottles which gave me the idea to try it in a bottle. Now I need to find a brewery who will fund me.” —Ananova
