17 nominations accepted for PP-156 by-poll
Staff Report
LAHORE: The scrutiny of nomination papers for by-election at the Punjab Assembly seat PP-156, scheduled for July 3, concluded on Tuesday. Returning Officer Sajid Mahmood Chattha accepted the nomination papers of 17 candidates.
Appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers can be submitted until June 4. The final list of candidates and their symbols will be published on June 12.
The constituency fell vacant on February 17 when a Lahore High Court (LHC) election tribunal disqualified Sheikh Amjad Aziz of the PML-N for holding a fake degree and declared Haroon Akhtar Khan of the PML-QA the returned candidate.
Mr Khan was sworn in as member of the Punjab assembly, but Mr Aziz challenged the LHC’s verdict in the Supreme Court, which de-seated Mr Khan on May 21 and ordered fresh elections.
The returning officer rejected Mr Aziz’s nomination papers, which were challenged by candidate Naveed Hashim Rizvi.
