Pope calls for workers’ rights to be respected
VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI, in his first address from his apartment window overlooking St Peter’s Square, called Sunday for human dignity to be respected in the workplace in a message marking May Day.“I hope that the young, especially, will not want for work, and that working conditions will be ever more respectful of the dignity of the human person,” the 78-year-old pope said.Addressing some 40,000 pilgrims in his first Sunday blessing, the new pontiff also sent greetings “with particular affection” to the Orthodox Churches, which on Sunday were marking Easter celebrations.
The pope also used the occasion to call for peace in strife-torn Togo and other countries “hit by conflict, disease and poverty.” afp
