Indian rebels offer peace talks
GUWAHATI A leading tribal separatist group in India’s restive northeast offered Saturday “conditional” peace talks with New Delhi to end more than two decades of deadly insurgency.
The offer by the outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force, fighting for an independent tribal homeland in remote Tripura state, was significant as it was the first time it had suggested talks. The group said three conditions must be met before talks could be held.
“We’re ready to sit for negotiations if New Delhi agrees to discuss our main demand of sovereignty,” rebel chief Ranjit Debbarma said by telephone from a location he declined to disclose.
Besides a separate state, demands include the presence of a UN representative during the talks and listing people whose names do not figure on the state’s official voter list prepared in 1952 as foreigners. afp
