Fahim discusses controversial issues with Nancy

By Shaukat Piracha

ISLAMABAD: President Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) Makhdoom Amin Fahim held a luncheon meeting with US Ambassador to Pakistan Nancy Powell here on Thursday, on Ms Powell’s desire, and explained to her his party’s point of view on the present political situation in the country.

Sources told Daily Times the luncheon meeting was held at the residence of the PPPP’s Senator Mr Enver Baig here.

“We explained our position on the prevailing political situation in Pakistan, particularly regarding opposition’s protest against the controversial Legal Framework Order (LFO),” Mr Fahim told Daily Times by telephone. He informed about conveying to the US ambassador that the PPPP wanted to ensure supremacy of parliament and the rule of law in the country. “We told her we want that the parliament should be supreme in the decision-making process and the Constitution must be restored in its original form as it stood on October 12, 1999,” he informed.

Mr Fahim told the ambassador the unilateral incorporation of the LFO in the Constitution was not acceptable to the people of Pakistan. “IF General Pervez Musharraf wants to make the LFO part of the Constitution, he must get it approved with the two-thirds majority of the parliament,” he conveyed to the US ambassador.

To a question whether he had requested for a meeting with the US ambassador, Mr Fahim said: “The US ambassador desired to see us and we invited her to a lunch for this meeting.”

Meanwhile, Turkish ambassador to Pakistan also called on Makhdoom Fahim here and discussed with him the present political situation in the country. “We explained our position on the LFO and other political issues,” Mr Fahim told Daily Times after the meeting.
