Pakistani elected mayor of New Jersey town
WASHINGTON: The new year will see a small New Jersey town swear in a Pakistani-American mayor, by all accounts, the first one to be so honoured.
Ali Chaudhry will be sworn in Friday as the first Pakistani-American mayor of the town of Baskin Ridge.
He has been active in local politics for six years. Elected member of the town council three years running, he was deputy mayor last year and is now “chief of all he surveys.”
Chaudhry has arranged a reception for Pakistanis living in the area Friday to celebrate his assumption of Baskin Ridge’s highest elected office. —Khalid Hasan
