PU to restructure faculties

LAHORE: The Punjab University (PU) has decided to restructure its faculties to make them more manageable. The existing nine faculties will be split into 14 new ones.
The decision was taken in a meeting of professors chaired by new PU Vice Chancellor Arshad Mahmood on Thursday.
The new faculties will be Earth and Environment Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Behavioural and Social Sciences, Management and Information Sciences, Commerce, Arts, Culture and Modern Languages, Islamic and Oriental Studies, Education, Law, Pharmacy, Chemical Technology, Medicine, and Mathematical, Statistical and Computer Sciences.
The Faculty of Earth Environment Sciences will consist of Geology, Earth Sciences, the earthquake centre, Environment Sciences and Geography. The Faculty of Life Sciences will consist of Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Mycology and Plant Pathology, Sports and Physical Sciences. The Faculty of Physical Sciences will consist of Chemistry, Physics, High Energy Physics, Space Sciences and Solid State Physics.
The Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences will consist of Sociology, Social Work, Women Studies, Population Studies, Political Studies, Psychology, Applied Psychology and Clinical Psychology. The Faculty of Management and Information Sciences will consist of Information Technology, Economics, Administrative Sciences, Business Administration, Business Information and Technology, Library and Information Sciences and Mass Communications.
The Faculty of Commerce will consist of the Hailey College of Commerce and Hailey College of Banking and Finance. The Faculty of Arts, Culture and Modern Languages will consist of Philosophy, History, Archaeology, Kashmiryat, Fine Arts, English, French, Pakistan Studies and South Asian Studies.
The Faculty of Islamic and Oriental Studies will consist of Islamic Studies, the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto and Hindi.
The Faculty of Education will consist of Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, English Language Teaching, Secondary Education, Technology Education, Islamic Education, Business Education, Social Education, Curriculum Studies, Research and Assessment and Special Education. The Faculty of Mathematical, Statistical and Computer Science will consist of Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, Computer Science and the Punjab University College of Information Technology.
According to an official statement, the proposed restructuring will now be placed before the syndicate for approval. The meeting also suggested appointing five new deans to look after academics, research and development, administration, undergraduate studies and student affairs.
