Senate Opp wants leader
By Mohammad Imran
ISLAMABAD: The opposition in the Senate, except the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), moved a motion on Saturday demanding that a senator commanding the support of the majority on the opposition benches be declared their leader in the upper house.
“The leader of the opposition means the house member nominated to the chairman in writing by the majority of the members of the opposition in the house. The chairman, after verification of the signatures, shall within one day notify the members who have been nominated,” the motion said.
Opposition senators moved this motion because the government nominated Maulana Fazlur Rehman as the opposition leader in the National Assembly. The NA speaker nominated Mr Rehman on the grounds that the MMA was the largest opposition group in the National Assembly. Opposition senators, excluding the MMA, want the Senate chairman to nominate Raza Rabbani, the parliamentary leader of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians. However, the MMA has nominated Prof Khurshid Ahmed for the slot.
