MD Tahir proposes new LHC bench for public interest hearings
LAHORE: Advocate MD Tahir has written a letter to National Assembly speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain to legislate the formation of a five-member special bench of the Lahore High Court that should take suo motu action on public interest issues. He proposed that Article 199 of the Constitution be amended and a special bench having a separate chief justice be constituted. Tahir proposed that this bench be empowered to disqualify the president or the prime minister, so that the government could not take decisions against the wishes of the people. That bench should take up matters relating to offences against children, extradition of Muslims to other countries, disparity between the rich and poor, illegal occupation of property and corruption. staff report
