Battle for Afghan town leaves six dead
KABUL: Backed by tanks and artillery, fighters loyal to a powerful Afghan warlord captured a northern village after a three-day battle that left at least six dead and 15 injured, a rival commander said on Sunday.
The forces loyal to the ethnic Uzbek warlord, Gen Abdul Rashid Dostum, captured Gosfandi village in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul just before midnight on Saturday, said Ashraf Naddim, a spokesman for the Tajik Gen Atta Mohammed, whose rival forces lost the town.
The spokesman said six of Gen Mohammed’s fighters had died and 15 more were injured. A spokesman for Gen Dostum, Gen Abdul Majid Roozi, declined to comment but said the issue was under discussion on Sunday in Mazar-e-Sharif, where senior commanders from both sides were meeting in a bid to resolve the conflict. —AP
