Anti-French feeling hits woman’s home

Francoise Thomas has tried to stay on the sidelines of the Iraq crisis, but a hateful message scrawled on her garage door brought anti-French sentiment uncomfortably close to home.

“Scum go back to France,” ready the angry note, spray painted on the French native’s garage door over the weekend. “I nearly had a heart attack,” Thomas, who lives in a suburb north of Houston, told the Houston Chronicle. “I love the United States.”

Over the weekend, one neighbor who wished to remain anonymous got out a bucket of white paint and covered up the angry red letters. “It’s just the right thing to do,” he told the Houston newspaper. Other sympathetic neighbors brought Thomas flowers and chocolate. —AFP
