10 killed as van plunges into ravine in Gilgit

GILGIT: Ten people were killed and 10 others were injured on Tuesday when the van they were travelling in skidded off a steep mountain road in Shigar valley, 120 kilometres southeast of Gilgit, police said.

Police and local administration reached the spot immediately after the accident and helped the rescue team evacuate the injured to the Skardu district hospital.

“Seven passengers died at the scene, one perished on the way to hospital and two died in hospital,” said police official Muhammad Afzal, adding that two of the injured were in a critical condition. The driver, Mohammad Iqbal, survived the accident, police said by phone.
