15 robbers held with Rs 17.5m stolen property

LAHORE: A Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA) team arrested 15 robbers of a gang and seized stolen property worth Rs 17.5 million and illegal weapons from them, Senior Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Chaudhry Shafqaat Ahmad said at a press conference on Tuesday.

He said the robbers confessed to 76 murders, robberies and car snatchings in Lahore.

The SSP said that the accused had told the police that they had planned to rob several banks, post offices and jewellery shops in the city and they had collected information about their targets. He said the accused were highly trained and lived in Model Town.

The SSP said that the accused had killed several citizens who resisted them during robberies, including brothers Sheikh Arshad and Sheikh Waqar on February 2. He said that police, which had reached the crime scene, gunned down two of them while others managed to escape. Constables Abdul Waheed and Javed Iqbal and a passerby were injured in the shootout.

The arrested criminals were gang leader Mubeen Ahmad, alias Fauji, Laeeq Ahmad Qureshi, Mehmood Khan, Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Asim, Amir Jamil, Abdul Qadoos, Amir Ali, Muhammad Mehboob, Muhammad Khalid, alias Muhammad Tariq, Shahzad, alias Kala, Muhammad Imran, Akbar Ali, alias Muhammad Ijaz, Zahoor Ahmad, alias Ali Sher, alias Joohra and Muqadam Ali.

Police recovered stolen property worth Rs 17.5 million, including Rs 500,000 IN cash, 15 cars, six motorcycles, nine mobile phones, three televisions, eight wristwatches, two tape recorders and gold jewellry. Police also confiscated two rifles, one Uzi gun, one automatic gun, one repeater gun, 13 pistols, 30,250 bullets, 15 cartridges and 18 magazines.

SSP Ahmed said that the government gave police Rs 20,000 for the investigation of a murder case, Rs 20,000 for a kidnap for ransom case, Rs 7,000 for a case of attempted murder, Rs 11,000 for robbery, Rs 2,500 for theft, Rs 2,500 for vehicle snatching, Rs 2500 burglary and Rs 300 for the recovery of illegal weapons.
