3 Westerners killed in Mosul

MOSUL: Insurgents attacked a car carrying at least three Westerners in Mosul on Friday, killing them and their Iraqi driver and cutting off the head of one of the victims, local witnesses said. The white, American-made sedan was attacked while driving through western Mosul and set on fire, the witnesses said. A photographer for Reuters saw three bodies lying on the street close to the blazing vehicle, all apparently Westerners. One of them had been beheaded. A fourth person, apparently an Arab, could be seen lying near the burning wreckage, his body partly consumed by flames. The US military was not immediately reachable for comment on the attack. Meanwhile, insurgents killed a US Marine during fighting in the violent Anbar province west of Baghdad, the US military said on Friday. The attack occurred on Thursday while the Marine was conducting “security and stabilisation” operations, a statement said, but did not say where exactly the attack took place. Several Turkish Embassy guards, on their way from Turkey to Baghdad, were killed on Friday in an armed attack on a road in Mosul, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. A militant group killed two US intelligence agents in Iraq on December 8, according to a video released on an Islamist website on Friday. US diplomats in Baghdad said on Friday that they were working to free an American hostage seized in the Iraqi capital seven weeks ago, saying they believed the man, whom they named as Roy Hallums, was still alive. agencies
