Conversion to CNG up 64% from last year
ISLAMABAD: The conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternate environment friendly, indigenous and cheaper motor fuel, increased at a rate of 64 percent in the country during last year.
According to official sources in the ministry of petroleum and natural resources, over 130 new CNG stations were established in the country last year, bringing their total number to over 450.
They added that CNG stations have also been established on the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway (M-2) to facilitate the commuters and also to increase utility of the motorway for enhancing revenues.
Approximately 80,000 gasoline run vehicles converted to CNG during last year, bringing the total number of vehicles converted to CNG to around 400,000, thus replacing about 380,000 tonnes motor gasoline, which is a big contribution towards self-reliance and controlling environmental degradation.
Further, the sources said the increasing use of diesel is not only putting burden on the country’s foreign exchange earnings, but also polluting ambient air, especially in the urban areas, with high emissions of particulate matter and other pollutants causing serious health problems to the public.
Therefore, the conversion/ replacement of high-speed diesel (HSD) buses with CNG buses in urban cities is also being planned.
The country has developed advanced CNG expertise and is providing assistance to neighbouring countries in development of CNG infrastructure. —APP
