Possible polio case in Khyber Agency
Staff Report
PESHAWAR: A possible polio case has surfaced in the remote Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
Two-year-old Sher Bano of village Jansay in Khyber Agency came to the notice of a visiting polio team on 11 August, which brought her to the Dogra district headquarter hospital. After medical examination of the child, doctors at the hospital suspected her of being infected with poliovirus and reported the case to the district health officer and specimen of her stool was later sent to Islamabad for examination. Talking to Daily Times, Dr Asif of Dogra hospital said that the child had been infected with the virus about 40 days ago and that at this stage, it was difficult to find any signs of the virus through tests. He said that an executive review committee consisting of four senior professors would analyse the case if the test report did not reveal signs of poliovirus.
Sher Bano’s mother told Daily Times that the child was not administered polio drops during the June anti-polio campaign, however, the hospital authorities hold the parents responsible for not getting their child vaccinated.
