Shalimar police tortures drug suspect to death

LAHORE: A man was killed in custody of Shalimar Police on Tuesday. The SSP (Operations) ordered registration of a case against three police officials in this regard.

Shalimar Police arrested Shakeel, Ishfaq and Ishtiaq 10 days ago and seized illegal weapons from them. The police started interrogation without registering a case against them. The police allegedly tortured the arrested men to glean information about a number of robberies, which the police suspected they might have committed.

Shakeel suffered from a renal failure in custody and the police sent him to Muhamdia Hospital where he died. The body was sent for an autopsy.

City police spokesman Nayab Haider said that the police had arrested the suspects from a picket on August 13. He said the SSP (Operations) had ordered registration of a case against Shalimar Station House Officer Malik Shamshair, Sub-Inspector Tariq Irshad and Constable Muhammad Afzal Billa. The case was registered on the complaint of the deceased’s brother Idrees. The other two men have been released.

Man found strangled: A man was found strangled in an under-construction house in Islampura Police jurisdiction. Zulfiqar, 40, was a mason and was building Abdul Ghaffar’s house. Ghaffar found Zulfiqar’s body strangled and naked in his house on Tuesday. The body was sent for an autopsy and a case was registered against unidentified killers.

Woman dies in accident: A woman lost her life and her son was injured in an accident in Misri Shah police jurisdiction. Muhammad Azam and his mother Musarat were going on his motorcycle when Azam lost control of the motorcycle and they collided with an electricity pole. Both received severe injuries and passers-by rushed them to Shalimar Hospital. Doctors pronounced Musarat dead on arrival while Azam was stated out of danger. The body was returned to the family without an autopsy.

Man opens fire at shrine: Two men scuffled at the shrine of Bibi Pakdaman and one of them opened fire.

A resident of Bibi Pakdaman had a property dispute with his nephew on which they scuffled and one of them opened fire. No injury or human loss was reported. The police have started investigation.

Police arrests 53 for selling illegal cigarettes: SSP Aamir Zulfiqar Khan, in an operation against cigarettes with no health warnings, raided shops in Defence, Gulberg, Ghalib Market and Mochi Gate areas and arrested 53 people. Cases have been registered against them.

Robberies: Seven robberies took place in Lahore on Tuesday.

Eight-armed men entered Pervaiz Iqbal’s house in Gulberg and held the family at gunpoint. They fled with cash, jewellery, cell-phones and two cars.

In two other incidents, armed men robbed cash, jewellery and valuables worth Rs 600,000 in the Factory area and Johar Town.

Armed men snatched Rs 10,000 cash, mobile phones and motorcycles from three motorcyclists in the Manga Mandi, Shahdara and Lower Mall areas. In another incident, a motorcycle was stolen from Old Anarkali police jurisdiction.
