Gunmen kill UN worker
MAZAR-I-SHARIF: Armed robbers in northern Afghanistan shot and killed a local United Nations worker then buried his body in his own courtyard, authorities said Wednesday.
Police dug out the body of the UN World Food Program worker on Wednesday, two days after he was murdered, Deputy Governor Sayed Ahmad Sayed of Faryab province said. “A UN worker was killed on Monday — we found his body buried in his courtyard,” he said. Four people have been arrested over the killing in Maymana, the capital of northwestern Faryab province, he added.
He said that the killers were armed robbers and not terrorists. “We believe it was a criminal case by robbers,” he added. World Food Program spokesman Maarten Roest said that the murder was a “very regrettable event” and the organisation was saddened by the loss of a staff member.
But he added that attack was understood to be unrelated to his work with the aid agency. afp
