9 killed in Kashmir
SRINAGAR: Nine people, including militants, were killed in violence in Held Kashmir, police said Thursday. Two of the militants were gunned down in a four-hour gunfight near Handwara town, 80 kilometres northwest of Srinagar late Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
A soldier died and two others were injured in the clash that erupted after troops surrounded a house where the two rebels were hiding. “The two opened fire at the troops to break the cordon but failed in their attempt,” the spokesman said. Indian troops shot dead two more militants in Chowkibal area Thursday morning, he said. Three more militants were shot in two separate encounters in Poonch district overnight and Thursday, he said, adding a commander of Hizbul Mujahedin was killed in Doda district on Thursday. —Agencies
Girl killed in LoC shelling
JAMMU: A five-year-old girl was killed and four women injured overnight as Pakistani shells hit villages in held Kashmir, Indian police claimed Thursday. Heavy shelling was reported in the Bhawani area of Rajouri district, a police spokesman said. —AFP
