Retiring CII members not being replaced

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) stopped operating on Thursday after 13 of its members retired after their three-year service while two more members will complete their term in November 16.

Fully consisting of 20 members, five posts have been lying vacant for the last 18 months. “According to the Constitution, eight members are required to hold a CII meeting formulated for Sharia-related legislation,” sources told Daily Times.

The outgoing CII Chairman, S M Zaman said according to the Constitution the Ministry of Religious Affairs sends a summary for member’s appointments to the president, but no final appointment was made.

The government’s disinterest was clear, as it was not able to appoint 5 members and failed to nominate another 13 member in place of those who retired. Mr Zaman retired along with other 12 members including Justice (r) Amjad Ali, Qari Roohullah, Syed Amir Hussain Gelani, Advocate Haider, Qazi Muhammad Haroon, Mufti Rufi Usmani, Syed Zakir Hussain Shah, Alama Aqeel Turabi, Professor Azra Riaz, Engineer Muhamad Samilullah, Mufti Zafar Ali Nummani and Syed Zaki Sialwi and Maulana Abdullah and Ghulam Muhammad Sialwi CII will retire next month.
