Filing returns by MPs: PPPP moves against Shaukat Aziz
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) on Thursday submitted an application against the duality of law, and said Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz should be ejected from the National Assembly because he had not submitted his assets statement.
The leader of the parliamentary party in the Senate and Deputy Secretary General Pakistan People’s Party Mian Raza Rabbani said
“It has once again been proved that there is a duality in the application of the law as the Election Commission has failed to cease the membership of the Finance Minister. It is a fact that the Minister has not filed his statement of assets and liabilities on the 30th September as required under section 25A of the Senate (Election) Act, 1975.”
Mr Rabbani maintained that the law was twisted to protect the Minister and the Election Commission should have issued a legal notification for terminating Mr Aziz’s membership.
He said the Election Commission has unfortunately given a new interpretation to section 25A of The Senate (Election) Act, 1975 to provide extra time to the defaulting minister. Clause (1) of section 25A orders a statement of assets and liabilities to be filed by September 30 each year.
