Model Town SP sent packing

Staff Report

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IG) Syed Masud Shah on Thursday relieved Superintendent of Police Model Town Captain (r) Syed Ahmad Mubeen Zaidi of his duties and directed him to report to the Central Police Office (CPO).

Sources in the IG’s office told Daily Times the action was prompted by an incident on Wednesday night when the SP reportedly misbehaved with the family of Major General Sabhat Hussain at a police picket on Main Boulevard, Gulberg.

Gen Hussain’s family were on their way back home when their car was stopped at the picket for having tinted glass. Constable Nazir Ahmad told the driver Qaiser Abbas to remove the tint from the glass, and they reportedly got into a fierce argument in front of the general’s family.

Sources said the case was immediately reported to senior police officials and Gulberg Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhammad Ali Naikokar and SP Zaidi arrived at the scene. “Despite the arrival of the senior police officials, the general’s family was detained at the spot for a long time,” sources said. A case was later registered at Main Market station against the constable for threatening the driver.

IG’s Office sources said senior Army officials on Thursday told the top police official to transfer the police officers involved in the incident.
