25 Maoist rebels killed

KATHMANDU: Nepali troops stormed a Maoist guerrilla training camp in the country’s west and killed at least 25 rebels, state radio said on Thursday.

It said one policeman was also killed in a five-hour gunbattle on Wednesday in Achham, 500 km (312 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, where soldiers destroyed the camp.

There was no comment from the rebels. More than 100 people, mostly rebels, have died since the Maoists ended a temporary festival truce a week ago, the government said.

The Maoists have been fighting since 1996 to set up a communist republic in the impoverished nation tucked between China and India. —Reuters
