No-confidence motion against Hassaan succeeds

By Amir Nafees

LAHORE: A no-confidence motion tabled on Friday by the opposition members in the Data Ganj Bux Town Union Council against Town Nazim Khawaja Ahmad Hassaan succeeded.

Mr Hassaan, a supporter of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said he would resign because he had no right to stay when he had lost the confidence of his members. He said the majority of members who voted against him were once his supporters.

Sixteen votes were polled for Mr Hassaan and 30 against him in the 48-member house. Two members have resigned from the house. PML-N women councilors started crying and some of them raised slogans against President General Musharraf and Lahore District Nazim Mian Aamir. Rana Liaqat, Irfan and other members loyal to Mr Hassaan said they would challenge the decision in court.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed in and around the town hall and the police remained there till Friday afternoon.
