Govt considers ban on bike rentals
LAHORE: The Punjab government is considering banning motorbike rentals in a bid to control crime. It is also examining a proposal to make it mandatory for house owners to provide the bio-data of tenants to the government.
Official sources told APP that the Punjab government was concerned by the increasing number of crimes committed by men riding rented motorbikes.
“We recently smashed a gang who committed 26 dacoitys on rented motorbikes,” said a senior police official. The sources said many rent-a-bike shops have tampered with the registration of their motorcycles, with the connivance of government departments, to avoid identification by the police.
Traffic police sources said they had also identified a new trend whereby the registration books of stolen or off-the-road motorbikes were being sold and bought. “The chassis of stolen motorbikes are changed in Bilal Gunj, where chassis numbers matching that of old registration books are being carved,” they said. app
