Zardari condemns HR activists’ arrest
Staff Report
LAHORE: The police attack on human rights activists participating in a mixed-run in Lahore on Saturday contradicts General Pervez Musharraf’s ‘enlightened moderation’, said Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader.
Zardari said the way the police treated Human Rights Commission of Pakistan leaders Asma Jehangir, Iqbal Haider and Hina Jillani damaged the international image of the country.
He said that the government was targeting the liberal forces of the country. He said the display in Lahore was a clear indication that the government had failed to deliver and had resorted to state terrorism. The sacrifices of Asma Jehangir for a democratic nation and human rights would not go in vein, he added.
He urged the Supreme Court of Pakistan and international human rights organisations to investigate the Lahore incident.
