Opposing counsels fight in courtroom
LAHORE: Lawyers Afaq Ahmad and Ghulam Murtaza got into a fight during the hearing of an election appeal in the court of the district returning officer on Monday.
Ruqayya, through Mr Murtaza, had challenged the rejection of her nomination papers for the seat of Muslim lady councillor in Union Council-18 for the by-elections on March 28. Mr Ahmad was arguing for Nighat Fatima, who was also contesting for the same seat. After hearing the arguments, the judge rose and adjourned the proceedings for a short while.
During his absence, the lawyers got into an argument and then began hitting each other. The court staff and other lawyers intervened and separated them. The Lahore Bar Association mediated and the matter was resolved.
The Lahore district returning officer heard 13 appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nominatoin papers by returning officers for the by-elections. The final list of candidates will apear on March 17. —Staff Report
