PU teachers defy VC
LAHORE: The majority of Punjab University’s Oriental College faculties’ members on Wednesday demonstrated and threatened to go on strike against a letter sent to them. The PU VC wrote the letter, telling the teachers to complete their research and academic tasks. The teachers said the letter was addressed to them for not commenting on a book authored by an Urdu Department assistant professor. The VC had asked the teachers to comment on the book on character building. An explanation call on October 9 to all department heads asking them to explain their ‘inordinate delay’ in compliance with the VC’s orders. What the book has to do with university business is beyond anyone’s comprehension, said a teacher. The teachers have demanded the top PU administration apologise, otherwise they would strike. PU Academic Staff Association President Dr Iftikhar Baloch said teachers liked to concentrate on more productive activities than to waste time. PU registrar Masood-ul-Haq, however, said that the purpose of sending the book had been misinterpreted. —Staff Report
