Christians demonstrate against Caritas housing
LAHORE A group of angry Christians demonstrated outside the Lahore Press Club on Wednesday against the Caritas Housing Scheme, whose officials they alleged were looting the poor.
Hundreds of protestors shouted anti-Caritas slogans and warned that if they were not allotted the plots they paid for, they would go on hunger strike. Caritas is an international non-governmental organisation for Christians.
Addressing the demonstration, Christian Welfare Association (CWA) leaders Pitras Ghani, Barkat John, Rafiq Sadiq and Zafar Masih said that Caritas had started the housing scheme for the poor but a lot of people hadn’t got the plots they had been allotted, even though they had paid their full instalments.
They said because the housing scheme was on Ghazi Road, where land has become extremely valuable following the opening of the new airport, Caritas officials sensed a way to get rich quick. They accused Caritas Director Remender Rezario of direct involvement in selling off the plots allotted to poor Christians.
The demonstrators demanded the Punjab governor initiate an inquiry into the scheme. They also demanded civic facilities like schools and a health centre in the housing scheme. Staff Report
