Taliban attack leaves four dead on border
KANDAHAR: Taliban armed with rockets and heavy machine guns attacked a government office near the Pak-Afghan border, sparking a gun battle that killed one Afghan soldier and three Taliban guerrillas, police said on Sunday.
About 60 Taliban fighters attacked the office of the Shorovak district chief, said Kandahar deputy police chief Gen Salim Khan said.
Tracks of the vehicles carrying the Taliban showed they came from across the border in Pakistan, and retreated there after the fight, Mr Khan claimed.
The bodies of the three slain Taliban were being held on Sunday in the district office, Mr Khan said. Two Afghan soldiers wounded in the fight were in good condition, he said. The attack came hours after the US military confirmed the launch of Operation Mountain
Storm, meant to root out Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters in the border mountains.
Meanwhile, two rockets hit Afghanistan’s eastern Laghman province, killing one civilian, Governor Mohammed Ibrahim Babkerkhel said on Sunday.
A rocket tore through the roof of the man’s home late on Saturday in Mehtarlam, Laghman’s capital, the governor said. —Agencies
