Staff Report
LAHORE: Protests were held on the appeal of Muttahida Majlis Amal (MMA) on Friday to condemn the desecration of the Holy Quran by American troops at the Guantanamo Bay naval base.
Demonstrations were held all over the country by MMA leaders,. They demanded stern action against perpetrators.
According to The Newsweek, which did not specify the date, American interrogators, “in an attempt to rattle suspects, placed copies of the Holy Quran on toilets and, in at least one case, flushed a Holy Book down the toilet”.
Qazi Hussain Ahmad, MMA president, strongly condemned the sacrilege of the Holy Quran in a jumma sermon at Jamia Mansoora in Lahore. He said that the desecration was a disrespect of the Muslim ummah. He said a demonstration would be held globally to condemn the incident.
He said that flushing down the Holy Quran was a conspiracy to scratch out the love for the book from the heart of Muslims.
Ahmad held President General Pervez Musharraf responsible for the derogatory cartoon in the Washington Times. The cartoon depicted Pakistan as a faithful dog of the United States.
He said that Islam was spreading rapidly in the west and the US was maligning this divine faith so that people would stop following it.
Hussain said that Muslim countries lacked sincere leadership. He condemned the cultural influence of India and the US and said that we should not learn from them.
