CEC calls for fair by-election in Malakand

ISLAMABAD: Irshad Hasan Khan, chief election commissioner (CEC), on Monday directed the provincial election commissioner, NWFP, to call a meeting of all contesting candidates, the district returning officer and the commandant, Malakand levies, to make necessary arrangements to ensure that the forthcoming by-election in NA-35, Malakand was conducted honestly.

This directive was made in the backdrop of complaints and counter complaints by contesting candidates. Polling for the election would be held tomorrow (Wednesday).

An official handout of the Election Commission stated that the provincial election commissioner, NWFP, had recorded the statements of the district returning officer and authorised representatives of the contesting candidates as well as the commandant, Malakand Levies, who had appeared before him on Monday.
