Tasman charges set by court
KARACHI: Judicial Magistrate West Mumtaz Ali Solangi decided on Saturday to treat the interim charge sheet as final since the police failed to present a final charge sheet against six crew members and the salvager of MT Tasman Spirit which ran aground near Karachi Port and caused the worst oil spill in the country’s history.
The court fixed Saturday as the day for presenting the final charge sheet by the police. However, the police could not comply with the orders of the court that treated the interim charge sheet as final and ordered the investigation officer of the case to present the list of witnesses and copies of their statements under section 161 of CrPC on the next hearing on Dec 16. The Karachi Port Trust lodged a case of criminal negligence, as a result of which the Pakistan coastline suffered substantial damage due to the pollution caused by the oil spill from the grounded ship, at the Dock Police station. —Staff Report
