5 die in Kashmir

JAMMU: Four Indian soldiers and one militant were killed on Friday in a gun battle in Kashmir near the Line of Control, a defence official said.

Militants opened fire as troops raided a suspected guerrilla hideout in the Surankot area of Poonch district, 240 kilometres northwest of Jammu, the official said. He said four soldiers and one militant were killed and that the firing was continuing into the early evening.

Kashmir has seen a violent week, with 13 people killed on Thursday and the government information department burning down in an attack on Tuesday that left two militants dead. —AFP
