Indian artist moves hall to tears
LAHORE: There was not a dry eye in the house when Neeta Mohindra finished her one-woman show at the Alhamra on Thursday. The Indian artist performed Buhey Barian, a 90-minute, three-act show, on the sixth day of the first Indo-Pakistan theatre festival on women’s rights, Zanani. The performance won a standing ovation. Madeeha Gauhar, Ajoka Theatre Company founder and emcee of the event, was speechless when she followed onstage. Ms Mohindra has a doctorate in tribal art forms of south Rajasthan and teaches fine arts in Indian Punjab. But it is the theatre that gives makes her whole, she said. Rangtol, an Amritsar-based theatre company, produced Buhey Barian. Each act was based on stories by prominent South Asian writers including Ajeet Cour, who is presently also in the city, and Amrita Preetum. Filmmaker and activist MK Raina, who graduated from the National School of Drama, directed the play. —Staff Report
